The Gift

The Gift

Christmas time is that time of the year when we commemorate the birth of Jesus. All around the world, people give and exchange gifts with family and friends. It is a joyous and happy time as we express our love for them.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we are reminded of the significance God places on gifts. He gave us the most valuable gift He could give us, the gift of His Son.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

God’s love for us caused Him to give His only Son that we might live with Him forever. The Apostle James tells us that every perfect gift comes from the Father.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

We receive that perfect gift when we believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. Salvation through Jesus is God’s gift to us.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

The gift of salvation is accompanied by the gift of eternal life.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Just as God gave us His ultimate gift, Jesus gave us gifts as well:

Ephesians 4:7-8 7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.

He overcame the powers and domains of Satan.

Colossians 2:15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

He gave to us His authority and power and then sends us out to use it.

Matthew 28:18-19 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

John 20:21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

And we know that we will be victorious in overcoming the world because we believe in Him. We trust in Him.

1 John 5:4-5 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

So, during this time of giving and exchanging of gifts, and being with family and friends, let us remember the love that God showed for us in giving us the best Christmas gift of all, His Son, Jesus Christ.  And we can say with the Apostle Paul as he writes to the church at Corinth:

2 Corinthians 9:15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
